For the filming location we will be using Lambert's Yard. I have been to this gallery a number of times over the past few years, and have seen it be transformed from a Fine Art exhibition, to a Pop-up shop and to an event space featuring Yoga. The below pictures show a variety of elements of the space, including a few ways it can be transformed. I love how lit up and beautiful it looks in the day due to the large windows, which will be perfect for filming.
I love the window panes and can't wait to experiment with the shadows cast through them.
This is a completely different way to use and transform the space. It shows its flexibility and how personalised it can be made.
While I am not choreographing the dance personally, the routine is key for the videography and final output. Therefore I will be sharing my inspiration with the choreographer, and any ideas I have. I think using the environment is really important, whether it be to reflect the rustic feel of an old setting, or contrast the modernity of a new building.
In addition, I think using the location and the space to its full potential is essential. I love the look of sunlight creating shadows from the windows, and the contrasts in space, like a wooden floor and white wall. These are a variety of images I have collated for inspiration for shots and positions, as well as ways to use different spaces.
Potential editing idea, repeating the dancer across the screen to create a group of dancers. I love repeating shots moments apart in my editing and I think this could be portrayed well.
I love the shadows cast by the window panes in this shot.
Here the fabric is key, contrasting completely with the black background the garment is enhanced and the movement portrayed clearly.
I love the contrast of the girly formal dresses in a run down graffitied environment.
I love the use of the darkness and small element of light to enhance and draw focus to the dancer.
My collaboration with Katie Gillies and Joanna Kelly features a dance choreographed and styled by Joanna Kelly. Katie's print designs will be used on fabric within the dance. Examples of her work and style are shown below. With a combination of Geometric and Organic designs, Katie's work is individual and original. I want to continue the feel and style of the designs through my videography, featuring a variety of shots of dance, location and the fabrics alone to portray them in a multitude of ways.
For one of my inspirational videos, I am collaborating with another Fashion Concepts student - Joanna Kelly and a Printed Textiles student - Katie Gillies to produce a Contemporary Dance Film. I will be the videographer and joint editor of a Fashion Film produced with Joanna Kelly, featuring her dancing with Katie Gillies' Print Designs, and will also be compiling my own interview with Katie, featuring clips of her work in both a dance setting and studio space.
Here are a selection of Dance Videos I have researched as Inspiration for the upcoming filming.
Sia's Elastic Heart video caused a lot of controversy due to the use of a young girl and older male for the dance. Personally, I think those who saw it in a paedophilic manor completely misread the dance. Sia suffers from mental illness and has had a destructive path, with suicidal moments, which is clear through the emotion in this song, and some of her others. Maddie Ziegler is the main focus, dancing in a rigid contemporary style. It looks effortless and tells a story through the movement. Shia LaBeouf perfectly contrasts her petite form, playing a more brotherly or departed friend role.
The music is complex, and the dance choreographed to fit. It it's entirety, it shows an entire relationship, battles and all, between friends or family, not on a romantic level.
This video has always been a favourite of mine. Ballet is such a beautiful medium of Dance and I love the contemporary feel. Mostly, I love the piano used throughout. I am a piano player myself and love the way it complements dance. This video uses a large number of dancers, so wouldn't be possible to influence the film for Joanna and Katie's Collaboration, but elements can be used as inspiration. I like the all black outfits to suggest a dark element. And the contract from the torn down and mostly off white surroundings. The location is unfinished and slightly derelict, which is a beautiful contrast from the fine tuned choreography and perfect timing of the dancers.
Final Edit of my Interview with Joanna Kelly about her work that was exhibited in the Louis Vuitton 'I Am Luxury' Exhibition. Joanna was a joint winner of the exhibition, due to her work being so personal, outside the box and very sentimental.
